Stéphanie Chardeau-Botteri, great-grandniece of Gustave Caillebotte, will discuss why Caillebotte, so famous in his day, became an unknown Impressionist over time. The lecture plunges us into the heart of the 19th century, tracing the artist's life through the history of Impressionism. It evokes the many roles played by Gustave Caillebotte: great painter, leading patron of the Impressionists, enlightened collector, outstanding navigator, philatelist, horticulturist and provocateur through his legacy. Based on family archives, Stéphanie discusses Caillebotte's friendships with Degas, Monet, Renoir and Pissarro, his paintings of a Paris transformed by Haussmann, of new water sports and regattas, his role as a leading patron of the Impressionists, his innovative and modern way of portraying women on an equal footing with men, and how his work influenced artists such as Munch and Hopper.
A graduate in law, management and art history, and a member of the Chambre Nationale des Experts Spécialisés, Stéphanie Chardeau-Botteri has been immersed for many years in the family archives, and wrote Caillebotte, The Unknown impressionist (Éditions Fayard), shortlisted for the Goncourt des biographies in 2024.
