AAWE Citizenship Discussion Group

Thursday, June 6

6-8PM

At Chez Kathleen

What does it mean to be a citizen of the United States today?  What is our lived experience of being a US Citizen abroad or even moving between the US and France/Europe?

AAWE’s Citizenship Committee would like to check in with membership to better understand our club’s concerns and understanding of being an American citizen.  In a small group setting, we’d like to hear what you have to say about things like what citizenship or dual citizenship means to you today in 2024 or perhaps your concerns around citizenship requirements and transmitting US citizenship to your children or grandchildren.

AAWE was founded in 1961 around two key concerns for American women at that time:  citizenship and bilingualism.  Since then, the citizenship profile of our members has evolved.  Bi-nationals and even tri-nationals are common among our membership but what does being a citizen of more than one country mean today?  Is it an advantage or a head-ache?  Democratic countries grant citizenship with the understanding that it is a two-way relationship – the country provides protection, services, and the right to vote and citizens uphold their duties of abiding by the laws, participating in the democratic process and paying taxes for example.

Come participate in a citizenship discussion to explore AAWE’s citizenship “flash points”.  Drinks and snacks will be available.  Limited to 12 participants per group.
